Adult Literacy & High School Education



Online, Walk-ins, Fax, and Mail Registration does not apply to the Adult Literacy and High School Diploma programs.

Contact the office at (310) 533-4689 ext. 8400 for an appointment as a new student, returning student, or for information regarding the CAHSEE. New students must meet with the counselor for placement and development of an academic career plan. Students whose native language is not English must complete Advanced ESL or its equivalent.

*Please Note: Morning childcare is available at the Hamilton Center in Room 2 for children ages 2 - 5 when parent is registered for classes.

Califonia High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE)

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for English Language Arts and Math is a requirement for the High School Diploma. Hamilton Adult Center offers the CAHSEE on dates determined by the State of California. Students must register in advance.

College Entrance-SAT/ACT Exam Preparation

Princeton Review offers a quality SAT/ACT preparation course at Torrance Adult School for a discounted price. 18 hours of classroom instruction and 16 hours of testing provides students with intense preparation for the SAT/ACT College Entrance Exam.

Personalized Math Test Preparation (Non-Credit Program)

Do you need help with Math? Get ready to take the CAHSEE, GED©, or Accuplacer Math tests. Get a personalized study plan to boost your scores! The TAS EDReady program for Math learning and review lets you focus on what YOU need to know. Work on campus with a Math teacher's assistance and online from home. High School Equivalency



The HiSET™ test is now being offered at the Hamilton Adult Center in a paper-based format. The test consists of five subject areas. Each subject area test costs $45, or you may purchase the entire test for $199. We also offer a practice test to help you determine if you are ready or need additional study for the test. We are now offering the GED® at Torrance Adult School! The test consists of four subject areas. Each subject area test costs $35. Students who wish to enroll need to do the following:

Online Courses

Work on your High School Diploma, enrichment, and/or exam preparation courses in the comfort of your own home. Courses include: Subject Remediation, High School Diploma, GED®, HiSet™, & CAHSEE preparation, as well as advanced courses. Many of our online courses require an orientation meeting on campus for the first meeting. Some classes are hybrid, with most instruction online and some in-person class meetings. Learning Centers


Language Arts Center

The Language Arts Center is an open enviornment where adults are provided opportunities for learning English language arts skills ranging from a non-reader level to competency based High School Diploma courses. Students are provided the basic language skills that integrate program standards for Adult Basic & Secondary Education.

The Adult Basic Education Program (ABE) located in the Language Arts Center is a literacy program that provides basic skills instruction in reading and writing. Students are provided computer assisted learning, individualized instruction, and independent study programs. ABE learners are taught basic reading, writing, speaking, listening, critical thinking, and problem solving skills to become more successful and productive members of the community.

These are competency based courses designed to develop reading comprehension, literary analysis, and written composition. Courses are structured to develop and enhance analytical and critical thought processes as well as interpretative and evaluative skills.

Learning Center

The Learning Center is a classroom enviornment that provides the opportunity for students to work independently and at their own pace. Students may enroll in classes required for a High School Diploma, enrichment, and/or preparation for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE), or High School Equivalency Certificate (GED® or HiSET™). A credentialed teacher is available for all students who need assistance. Students may also complete course requirements in some areas through the Independent Study Program. Students in Independent Study are provided work to study at home and will meet with a teacher a minimum of once per week to review their work and take tests.
